GIPF project is a series of abstract 2-player games by Belgian game author Kris Burm. The series is one of the most successful and best-known game series in the world. All the games of the project are counted among the best games of their genre – on boardgamegeek.com, among other places!
The first game and, at the same time, the name-giver of the project is GIPF. First released in 1997, the game was a great success from the start. For example, GIPF was nominated for the Belgian Toy Award, won the award for the Best Abstract Game 1998 in the USA, and was listed on the recommendation list of Spiel des Jahres in 1998.
Over the next ten years, Kris Burm published six more games: TAMSK, ZÈRTZ, DVONN, YINSH, PÜNCT, and TZAAR; TZAAR was included in the series as the successor of TAMSK. Thus, originally, TAMSK was the second game of the series; but in 2007, it was replaced by TZAAR. In the years that followed, all the games of GIPF project were regularly nominated for and awarded international prizes, just as the first game in the series.
All titles of GIPF project are outstanding abstract games that have established themselves as independent games. Nevertheless, GIPF is the central element of the series. GIPF assumes a special role within the project, not least because of the so-called potentials. These potentials are special game pieces that allow a player to make special moves in GIPF. The precondition for using these potentials is that you first get them by playing other GIPF project games.
Since the start of the series, the games of GIPF project are lauded and liked by both reviewers and players. We are proud to be able to republish the entire GIPF project series. After a long period during which the games were not published, we are now pleased to rerelease the complete series.
We made a start with GIPF and YINSH. Then, at the Spiel 2016 in Essen, the next titles, TZAAR and ZÈRTZ, came out. And in 2017, right on time for the 20th anniversary of the first GIPF game, we have relaunched DVONN and PÜNCT.
Fans of the series may be delighted not only with the timeless design and the uniform character of the boxes, but also with the quality of the boards and pieces of the new GIPF project edition, which is, of course, of high caliber as usual. The publication of the potentials is scheduled for 2018.
This year, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of GIPF project, the long-awaited seventh game, LYNGK, will be the culmination of the series.
